My goal is to propose a micro-city prototype that will create a self-sufficient community with the resources to identify and solve social, economic, and environmental concerns for individuals living in rural areas that are at risk of migrating to the city as a result of climate change. People in Bangladesh's rural communities near riverbanks and coastal areas cope with climate disasters by relocating to other parts of the country, particularly the capital city Dhaka.
The majority of people in the countryside rely on agriculture and fish farming for a living, and their income is quite poor. They become homeless and jobless when their homes and lands are destroyed by flooding, resulting in poor living conditions in rural areas. They are also prone to contracting infections quickly, which is one of the causes for their high COVID-19 rate. These people aim to improve their living conditions by moving to the city, where they think they will find more work opportunities. However, they are forced to live in slums or on the sidewalks without proper shelter or food. Most of the time, they become garment workers, street vendors, or even jobless. Because of the increasing number of people migrating to the city, the city is becoming extremely crowded, resulting in infrastructural shortages and increased pollution.
As a result, it's critical to ensure that people are able to live in their own communities, with adequate resources and no fear of flooding. If this master plan includes flood protection, a rural center, low-income housing made of local materials, educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and improved transportation systems, people will be able to live better lives and migration rates will be reduced. And this might be a model that can be used in a variety of situations where people are faced with the same problem and decide to relocate to another city.
